after establishment of Israel as independent state.
At the very beginning, it was mainly documentaries or news based roundups.
During 1960s, there were few Israeli directors like Eprahim Kishon, Uri Zohar, Menahem Golan, who took the responsibility of projecting Israeli movies from a new perspective.
The first professionally shot Israeli movie was Sallah Shabati by director Eprahim Kishon during 1964, followed by Hole in the Moon by director Uri Zohar.
During 1960-70s, movies were based on class and denomination conflicts, particularly from a romantic angle.
Usually those movies were based on status conflict between Mizrahi Jews and Ashkenazi Jews.
Plots were something like - the hero, a Mizrahi Jew, poor but street smart falls for a rich, arrogant Ashkenazi woman.
Then there was the 'New Sensitivity' movement which resulted in social artistic films like 'But where is Daniel Wax', 'The Policeman Azoulay', 'I love you Rosa' and 'The House of Checlouche Street' and many more.
Few these movies even got nominated for Oscar award in foreign film category.
This period was followed by 1980s which witnessed notable films like Beyond the Walls, Summer of Aviya, Late Summer Blues.
Hamsin, Noa Bat 17, Burning Land and so on.
Directors like Uri Barbash, Gila Almogar, Renen Schorr and many did get noticed for their thoughtful rendition.
The era of 1990 saw the rising of anti-heroes.
Israeli movies during this period tried to follow a different path, rising above the common formula.
Thus films like Amazing Grace by Amos Gutman, based on the life of AIDS patient, received critical acclaim.
Few other amazing movies during this period were Life according to Agfa, Zohar, Sing of the Siren, Afula Express, Strangers in the night and so on.
During the first half of 21st century, there were many Israeli films which won awards in film festivals.
Few movies worth watching were Late marriage, Broken wings, Walk on Water, Campfire, Beaufort and many more.
Be it Bourekas films or New Sensitivity movies, Israeli cinema has gone through different genres and have always believed in experimenting something unique and artistic.
