- There are many different types of rechargeable batteries from which to choose; however, three are by far the most commonly used and easy to purchase. They are lithium ion (Li-ion), nickel metal hydride (NIMH) and nickel cadmium (NiCd).
- Lithium ion batteries are growing more and more popular for use in electronics because they retain their charge longer than other rechargeable batteries, although their overall lifespan is shorter (2 to 3 years) than other rechargeable batteries. Lithium ion batteries are made using lithium cobalt oxide and carbon.
- Nickle cadmium rechargeable batteries are made with nickel oxide hydroxide or cobalt hydroxide and metallic cadmium. Due to cadmium's toxicity, nickle cadmium batteries are not as frequently used and instead have been replaced in popularity with nickel metal hydride.
- Nickel metal hydride batteries are made with nickel oxide hydroxide or cobalt oxide hydroxide and alloy. With the exception of the alloy, NiMh batteries are identical to NiCd, but the alloy is a nontoxic ingredient that makes these batteries less dangerous.
- Lithium sulfur rechargeable batteries are newcomers to the field. These batteries are making headlines because they are made using lithium and a sulfur, which makes it the only rechargeable battery to not contain a metal material. This lack of metal makes them more environmentally friendly, since they pose no danger to wildlife once they are disposed.
