Mechanical toys can be made from a variety of items. Wood or metal mechanical toys are the most common. Mechanical toys work by leverage, grip, winding, electricity and solar power. The invention of a small solar cell has created many mechanical toys that can move when they are exposed to light. - Animals can be constructed from wood, plastic, metal and found objects. Construct an animal that is representational of the real thing. Animal shapes that work well for mechanical toys include birds, dinosaurs, frogs, cats and dogs. Small children learn these animals at a very young age. Having a mechanical toy that is representational of one of these animals will help to reinforce knowledge that children have learned.
- Many of us find mechanical vehicles to be enchanting. Cars, trucks, airplanes, motorcycles, diggers, and helicopters are only a few of the varieties that people enjoy. The design can be totally outrageous as long as it has some characteristic that tells what type of vehicle it is. The automated mechanism can be as simple as the wheels turning to make the vehicle move on its own.
- Mechanical toys made with solar-powered chips have become quite popular in the market today. The small mechanical toys can be made from salvaged parts of other items such as computers, slot cars, watches, clocks and anything else that has small mechanical parts. The parts can be assembled into abstract versions of animals and vehicles. The nice thing about mechanical toys made with solar cells is they will work as long as there is a light source. They must, however, be stored in the dark when not in use.
- The availability of multiple materials to build mechanical toys provides the builder with options to increase complexity. Multiple parts can be assembled into robots, working machines, animals and many other items. The power source can be a winding system, batteries or solar powered.
