Monopoly Board Rules

    Moving

    • All players start the game on "GO." Each player rolls two dice and moves in a clockwise direction, according to the number rolled. Any roll of doubles (the same number on both dice) gives the player another roll, but a third consecutive doubles roll sends that player to Jail. Any time a player passes GO on the board, he gets $200 (except when being sent to Jail). If a player draws a Chance or Community Chest card that instructs her to move to another space, she moves forward (clockwise) to get there.

    Properties, Monopolies and Development

    • A player who lands on an unowned property can buy it for the posted amount. If the player chooses not to, the property is then auctioned to everyone in the game (including the original player who didn't buy it). Anyone who lands on an owned property must pay rent to the player who owns it. When a player owns a "monopoly" of one color group, the rent on those properties is doubled, and the player can now buy houses and hotels to put on them. A player can't put extra houses on a property until all properties in that group have the same number of houses. Once all properties in a group have four houses, the player can replace them with hotels. Houses/hotels are sold and properties are mortgaged for half the value they were bought for. To buy a property out of mortgage, a player must pay the mortgage value plus 10 percent.

    Jail

    • A player in Jail gets three chances to get out free by rolling doubles on a turn. Anyone who rolls doubles moves that number rolled but does not get an extra turn. A player can also get out at any time by paying $50, but the player must pay $50 and get out after three failed doubles attempts. There are also Chance and Community Chest cards for getting out of Jail free, which players can keep once drawn and use when needed. A player in Jail can still collect rent from properties, buy houses/hotels and conduct other business transactions.

    House Rules

    • There are extra rules that players choose to add to the game that are not official rules of the game. The most common is placing tax money paid by players in the center of the board and awarding it to whoever lands on Free Parking. Another is paying $500 to a player who lands directly on GO. Some may also allow for unlimited property development (there is a standard limit of 32 houses and 12 hotels for the whole game). These "house rules" almost always cause the game to drag on longer.
