How to Write Senator Patrick Anderson

    • 1). Choose a professional font for your letter, such as Arial or Tahoma in 11-point type. Set up 1-inch margins on the top, bottom and sides. Make the letter flush-left (with no indents). Single-space between lines and double-space between paragraphs.

    • 2). Write the return-address heading, which includes your address only (not your name), followed by the date. Double-space.

    • 3). Write Anderson's name and address. On the first line, write "Senator Patrick Anderson," on the second, "2300 N. Lincoln Blvd., Room 417A, Oklahoma City, OK 73105." You might want to send a duplicate copy to Anderson's district address, which is P.O. Box 5589, Enid, OK 73702. Double-space.

    • 4). Write the salutation, followed by a colon, and not a comma: Write "Dear Senator Anderson:" and follow with a double-space.

    • 5). Devote the first paragraph to your purpose for writing. Be direct and specific. If the essence of your letter is a complaint or criticism of an issue such as one of Anderson's votes or positions on an issue, be straightforward but polite. Strive for a logical, reasonable and calm tone. Remember to mention that you are a resident of Anderson's district, and how long you've lived there.

    • 6). Devote the rest of the letter to fleshing out your point. State your position and rationale clearly. Realize that while it's admirable to write with spirit and conviction, it is also wise to choose your words carefully and with precision.

    • 7). Devote the last paragraph to a succinct explanation of what you want Anderson to do or not do. If you are appealing to him to change his vote on a measure, say so. If you want him to champion a cause on your behalf, ask him. Otherwise known as a call to action, this appeal summarizes your real objective in writing the senator. Say that you look forward to getting a reply and explain how Anderson might contact you if he needs further information.

    • 8). Choose an appropriate closing. "Respectfully yours," "Yours very truly," "Yours truly," "Sincerely yours," "Sincerely" and "Yours sincerely" are all good choices.

    • 9). Leave enough space for your signature, and then type your name below.
