- This installation requires several parts. A new installation requires all of the parts and if you are replacing an old tank, it is best to use all new parts also. The parts list includes a long tank cross, pressure switch, brass nipple, pressure gauge, drain, check valve and a pressure relief valve. These parts are available for sale individually or merchants sell a water tank pressure fitting kit that has all of the parts pre-assembled for you. This eliminates the need for electrical wiring and a torch for the copper union fittings. Make sure and measure the distance to your main water supply entrance for the correct amount of PVC pipe and fittings.
- Placing your well pressure tank on cement blocks will level the tank outdoors for proper operation. This method keeps the water level in the tank. Cement blocks also lift the tank off the ground or floor in a garage or enclosed area so that the well is easier to drain if need be in the future. It is much quicker to drain a well into buckets that fit under the drain valve than to attach a garden hose and drain it in that manner. Cement blocks also keep the base of the well pressure tank from sitting on a solid surface with inadequate airflow, which in case of minor leaks will rust the bottom of the tank out and render it useless.
- If you are using individual parts for your installation, make sure that the Teflon tape in use at the joints is wraps around the threads in the correct direction. Point the end of the connections where the threads are at yourself and wrap several revolutions around the threads in a clockwise motion. The union of the two pieces will travel this same direction as you tighten them. If the tape is wrapping in the opposite direction it will peel back as you tighten the joint and become ineffective.
- On all PVC connections, make sure to use a plumbing cleaner before applying the plumbing glue. New PVC pipe and fittings may seem like they should be clean, but the cleaner removes oils from anyone's hands that have touched it, small particles of sand and tiny pieces left behind from cutting the pipe. After applying the pipe glue wait at least 20 minutes before turning on the water supply so that the glue has ample time to adhere the PVC joints.
