- 1). Turn the dial on the tub’s overflow drain cover until the stopper pops up in the tub’s drain. Pull on the sides of the stopper to lift it out of the drain, and continue pulling to remove the arm attached to the underside of the stopper.
- 2). Remove the screw in the middle of the overflow cover’s dial using a Philips screwdriver. Pull on the overflow cover to remove the cover and the linkage from the overflow tube.
- 3). Insert the handles of a pair of pliers into the main drain opening, place a screwdriver through the handles, and twist the pliers and tub drain piece counterclockwise to break the seal under the drain and unthread it from the pipe below.
- 4). Cut an access hole on the wall, near the floor, directly behind the tub’s overflow drain opening, if an access door does not exist, using a drywall saw. Turn the compression nuts between the drainpipe pieces counterclockwise with your hands or a pipe wrench to disassemble and remove the drainpipe setup from under the tub.
