- 1). Wash your nail clippers in warm soapy water to kill germ growth. Rubbing alcohol also works as an effective disinfectant.
- 2). Wash and dry your nails using a towel or hair dryer set to a low heat setting. Wet nails are more likely to tear, bend or not cut smoothly.
- 3). Place your foot or hand on a hard surface so you have greater control and can execute a more precise and smooth cut.
- 4). Place your nail in the mouth of the clippers. Be careful not to injure the soft tissue at your fingertips.
- 5). Cut the nail straight across, not in a curved shape. Make several smaller cuts across your nail if necessary. Such an approach is best for toenails and long fingernails.
