Packing List for a Scout

    Clothing

    • A scout's clothes should focus on layers, layers, layers. Clothing which can be added or taken off prepares scouts for a variety of weather conditions. For example, desert camps can be unbearably hot during the day and extremely cold at night. A pair of shorts, long pants, one short-sleeve and one long-sleeve shirt, socks, underwear, rain jacket and bandanna should be on every packing list. The weather will determine the other clothes on your list. Cold weather trips should include a medium to heavy jacket, sweater and long johns. Warmer weather trips should include swimming shorts and extra pairs of shorts and short-sleeve shirts. Scouts going on hiking and backpacking trips should avoid cotton and instead pack more clothes made with wicking materials to keep dry.

    Pack

    • A scout's pack is his home in the wilderness. It should be sturdy, comfortable and have room to carry all the necessary gear. The type of trip and the scout's physical size are important factors in selecting a pack. For backpacking trips, a scout needs a pack with an internal or external frame that includes a hip belt. A day pack should suffice for shorter hikes and camping. The size of the pack should progressively get bigger the longer the trip. The pack also should fit the scout's torso. Poor fitting packs can lead to fatigue while hiking. It can also lead to future back problems. A pack should be tested at the store using weights or books to determine the right fit. A rain cover for the pack is essential when hiking in wet conditions.

    Footwear

    • A scout should always have a pair of hiking boots for the trail, and sandals or comfort shoes while at camp. Hiking boots should be the correct size and worn in to avoid blisters. If the terrain is level, a pair of cross-trainers or trail running shoes can be substituted for hiking boots.

    First Aid

    • A scout should always pack a first aid kit. Essential first aid items include prescription medications, bandages, soap, super glue, sterile pads, roll bandage, triangular bandage, mole skin foam (for blisters), antiseptic wipes, an anti-histamine, ibuprofen, burn cream and antibiotic ointment. A first aid kit containing these items will be small enough to take on all recreational outings.

    Camp and Backpacking Essentials

    • Camping and backpacking require essential items for survival and comfort. Some essential items include matches, map, compass, insect repellent, mess kit, pocket, knife, sunscreen, toiletries, canteen, flash light, spare batteries, sewing kit, Duct tape and sealable plastic bags. Scouts may want to bring items for enjoyment, such as playing cards, dice or other games which take up little space in a pack.
