- Britain's James Dyson is the inventor of the Dyson vacuum. He started developing a new type of vacuum in 1978 and went through 5,127 prototypes before he had a vacuum ready for retail. His goal was to create a vacuum that didn't lose suction and more easily cleaned tight spots such as corners.
- The first vacuum released by James Dyson sold in Japan as the G Force. In 1991, it won the International Design Fair and sold for $2,000 each. The vacuum was first sold in Japan because British manufacturers weren't interested in vacuums that didn't use bags. In 1993, Dyson started a company in England under his own name and sold the DCO1, a vacuum that sucked up particles as small as cigarette smoke.
- In 2002, the Dyson was released in the United States. Sales started with 210,000 in 2003 at 3,000 stores and were up to 10,000 stores by 2005. In 2008, Forbes ranked Dyson the 746th richest man in the world.
- Dyson has 13 models of vacuum cleaners on the market as of 2011. The vacuum cleaners specialize in areas such as picking up pet hair or working on multiple floors. Upright, canister and robot vacuums are all available for purchase.
