How to Talk About Marriage With Your Boyfriend

    • 1). Get a feel for what your boyfriend is thinking, before you bring up marriage, by discussing other related topics. After having conversations about life goals, philosophy, religion, morals and other important views, you can assess if you and your partner are heading toward the same place.

    • 2). Time it right. While every relationship is different, bringing up the topic too soon, such as in your first few months of dating, may make you seem too pushy or that you're moving too fast.

    • 3). Keep your eyes open for an opportune time to weave the subject into a conversation. The engagement of a sibling or a friend's wedding may be the perfect time to turn the conversation to the subject of marriage. This casual way to start the conversation can get the information you're looking for without making you seem like you're pressuring him.

    • 4). Bring up the topic of marriage if a clever segue does not arise. While the conversation is about a serious matter, try to approach it in a relaxed way that will invite your boyfriend to be open and honest. A confrontational approach is more likely to scare him away or cause him to clam up.

    • 5). Talk about your relationship. Ask about his views on your relationship and whether he sees it going somewhere. Make it clear that you are not looking for a set date or forcing him to propose anytime soon. Instead, explain that you are happy with your relationship and want to make sure that you are on the same page and heading toward the same goal.

    • 6). Listen to his response. If he also sees marriage in your future, good. If not, try to learn why he is opposed to the idea. If his answer seems reasonable, like he wants to find a stable job first, or it is something you can overcome together, then you may wish to consider working through the issues. On the other hand, a disinterest in marriage or a very negative response may indicate that your relationship may be a dead-end one.
