The federal executive branch is the top-paying employer for graphic designers, offering an average salary of $74,030.
- Wages for graphic designers vary from one location to the next, largely due to differences in the costs of living. The BLS names Washington, D.C., as the nation's top-paying state for graphic designers with an average salary of $68,110, followed by California at $57,180. New York, Connecticut and Maryland follow with salary averages ranging from $51,880 to $56,680. The metropolitan area of San Francisco, California, is the highest-paying area in the country for graphic designers with an average salary of $74,660.
