- 1). Download and install an audio recording program. This will dictate the rest of the process. If you're willing to spend some money on higher end computer software, an audio cable won't be required for recording. For most users, the cheaper approach will involve downloading a free, lightweight recording program, such as Audacity.
- 2). Set up the program to capture the audio. Plug one end of an 1/8-inch audio cable into the audio-out port (headphone jack) on the computer, and the other end into the audio-in port (microphone jack). Make sure the recording software has its input set to the audio-in port.
- 3). Click the software's "record" button and begin playing the sound you want to record. The recording program typically will have options as to how you want the audio saved. Choose your preferred file format (MP3, WAV, etc).
