- 1). Spray or apply from a squirt bottle a small quantity of soft scrub cleaner to the area with mold. Allow to set for a few minutes so the cleaner can eat into the fungus.
- 2). Scrub away the mold with a bristle brush, rinsing the fungus off as you work.
- 3). Be prepared for a second or third scrubbing if the mold spores have gotten deep inside the foam padding of the helmet or pads.
- 4). When you are satisfied with the cleanup, take the gear outside, place it on the lawn and blast the equipment with water pressure from a garden hose to remove any remaining mold and residue of the cleaning product.
- 5). Allow all equipment to air dry completely before storing it in a gearbag or locker. It's a good idea to scrub your gearbag periodically as well, since the damp interior of the bag is a paradise for mold spoors.
- 6). Spray Lysol or a similar disinfectant inside and outside the helmet and pads after drying.
- 7). Get rid of any off odors by pouring a small amount of concentrated lemon juice on the equipment and swirling it around, then blot dry with a paper towel.
