Obama Immigration Reform Beneficial to Democrats

I am generally diametrically opposed to everything the Obama administration does. However, Friday's Obama immigration reform, which halts the deportation of undocumented aliens who came into the country as children, was in my estimation an ideal thing to do. Here is why I think so.

I am very close to a young woman who was simply brought to the country by her mother when she was 3 years of age. She has lived in our country since that time and has never gone back to her native country. She attended elementary school, middle school, and eventually graduated from high school in the United States. She even married her high schoolsweetheart. They had a son together, but she divorced him when she learned he cheated on her.

She is now 24 years old. She is getting an education in order to become a nurse, works fulltime, and is a single mother raising a 5 year-old boy. She has never been in trouble with the law and in contrast to a number of people who are blessed to be born in this country - like for example individuals involved in the Occupy Wall-Street movement - she does not complain about her situation and is thankful to reside here. Most importantly, she loves this country and dreams some day to be a citizen.

Last year she proceeded to fulfill her dream and submitted the correct documents employing the services of an immigration attorney, but the judge denied her application. She and her lawyer submitted an appeal that was also rejected. Presently, she is on her second and last appeal. If she were to have lost this appeal, she would have been scheduled to be deported in November. That means she might have been instructed to leave the one nation she has ever known. She might have been compelled to go to a place where she knows no one and doesnt speak the language. What's more, she might also have lost her son considering that the child's father would very likely have fought for custody. As a consequence of President Obama's immigration reform, she does not have to dread deportation any longer, no matter if her appeal is once more denied.

On a political stand point, Obama's immigration reform is mostly a victory for Democrats and a loss for Republicans. This reform may potentially open a back door to citizenship for many of these young immigrants who are likely to become Democratic voters. Even in the event that ideologically they've got more in common with conservatives than liberals, they are going to remember that it actually is a Democratic president who offered them the gift of citizenship while he was opposed by Republicans.
