Working late? Late class, or studying late at the library? It gets dark earlier as winter approaches.
Taking a shortcut on foot that you're not familiar with, or just taking the dog out for a walk? Going home from a late night out - we just really don't even think about it.
Assault.
Robbery.
Rape.
Abduction.
Murder.
This is not what you wanted for your life.
But, knowledge is power.
Especially knowledge combined with a little preparation.
There are many solutions available on the market today to use to protect ourselves; we only need to purchase and be prepared to use them.
For example, a stun gun.
How To Use Your New Stun Gun Wow, a stun gun? Seems a little over the top, doesn't it? If you think about it, the person attacking you doesn't much care if he hurts you.
Actually, he WANTS to hurt you.
Stun guns are non-lethal and will only incapacitate him for a few minutes.
Besides, he'll recover just fine - in police custody.
When You Say Incapacitate...
Even if he has on a thick winter coat, or he's intoxicated, a stun gun is 100% effective against him (the rare exception might be a rubber raincoat.
) He will immediately fall to his knees and be disabled for up to 30 minutes.
He can't harm you while his muscles don't respond, and you have time to escape.
Give it a Try! Become familiar with your new stun gun.
After all, if you're afraid of it, you won't use it and it can't help you.
Test it and get familiar with it.
You may find that the sound alone may be enough to deter his attack.
It sounds pretty wicked! Keep your fingers as far away from the contact probes as the switch and safety zone plate are, which is about 1-1/2", otherwise you may receive a mild shock yourself! When you press the switch a charge will fire across the 2 probes on the front of the stun gun.
It will stop when you let go of the switch.
To simply test the gun, fire for only about a second (longer firing will just run down the batteries).
After test firing your stun gun, be sure to touch the probes against a piece of metal to create a little spark which will completely discharge the gun of any remaining charge.
Or, wait at least 5 minutes before touching the probes, just to be safe.
Where to Stick It: The stun gun generally does not even look like a gun.
It is a hand held battery operated device, sometimes straight and sometimes slightly curved for a more accurate strike, designed to give him an electrical shock that temporarily interrupts his neurological impulses which control his muscles.
The best part of the body to reach for is the torso, mostly around the gut, or the upper shoulders.
Nerves are concentrated at these points, but the stun gun will work fine on just about any part of the body.
The less efficient areas may be on the arm or a leg, where the attacker may not be completely incapacitated, especially with a low voltage gun.
How Long to Stick it: How long depends entirely on the VOLTAGE of your stun gun.
The voltage will determine how long you need to hold the gun to your attacker's body to get the desired effect.
If the voltage is really low (say only 100,000 volts), you may have to hold the gun as long as 10 seconds for it to have enough effect to incapacitate him, which may also give him enough chance to take it away.
Get the highest voltage stun gun you can afford, then you only need 1 second or less of actually touching him to incapacitate him.
Normally 600,000 to 775,000 volts are adequate.
We're talking on average about between $55 to $90 for some serious muscle.
What makes them safe is the fact that they only carry 3-5 milliamps.
It takes a full amp to kill a person.
This Could be Fun No, a stun gun would probably be pretty terrifying to have to use, but certainly less terrifying than the alternative.
And you will probably save your own life, as well as possibly the life of someone else.
Be sure to use fresh batteries - if you are assaulted by multiple assailants your stun gun will be capable of firing about 100 times.
Also available are stun guns actually disguised as something else (cell phone, flashlight, or a baton) and will help catch an attacker off guard.
Are Any Safeguards Built in? Yes, many come with wrist straps so that if the gun is taken from you, the wrist strap breaks away from it rendering it useless.
Also, don't be afraid to stun someone who may already have a solid grip on you - the electric charge WILL NOT go through him back to you.
The longer stun baton will actually also shock the attacker on the ENTIRE business end (about 6" of length) at the end by the prongs.
Lots to Consider Stun guns are not the only option when searching for personal protection products.
There are lots of options to consider.
But consider getting SOMETHING.
It's better to have help when you don't need it, than to need help when you don't have it.
