Drill Press Metal Finishing

    Setup

    • Make sure your work station is set up for maximum ergonomic comfort. Pull up a chair or stool and adjust the table height to your needs. Your hands should rest comfortably on the drill press table, while your feet should be flat on the floor.

    Test the Bits

    • If you have not used a drill press as a rotary tool before, you will need to test the bits. This is done by placing a bit in the chuck and tightening it. Wear wrap-around eye protection to prevent injury during accidental release of the bit or cutting tool. Turn the drill on and run the bit over a piece of scrap metal to find out what effects it can create. Use the handle of the press to pull the bit onto the scrap piece in a pattern of overlapping circles. Repeat the process with each bit until you are sure what effects you can create.

    Attachments and Bits

    • Felt bullets provide a high shine when used for polishing. Wire cup brushes score the metal, giving it a scoured look.

    Make Your Mark

    • Once you are sure which effects you want to create, put an actual piece on the work table. Cut, grind and polish your project until you are satisfied with its appearance.
