How to Reduce Use of Plastic Flatware

    • 1). Avoid purchasing plastic utensils for use at home. Invest in a set of silverware if you do not already have one. Affordable silverware can be found at nearly any store, as well as Goodwill stores. Stock up on extra forks or spoons if you find yourself continually running out and using disposable utensils. Use silverware utensils at every meal.

    • 2). Purchase sturdy reusable plastic flatware if you must have some plastic utensils on hand for an event such as a cookout or large picnic. Wash all of the utensils after use and keep them on hand for the next such event.

    • 3). Keep a set of reusable utensils at work, or bring a set with you each day if you frequently eat meals in the office or at your desk. Wash the utensils after each use. If you forget to bring reusable utensils with you and have to use plastic, wash them by hand when you are finished and save them at your desk to reuse again later.

    • 4). Decline plastic flatware at fast food restaurants and instead take your own set of reusable utensils along. To-Go Ware makes a set of bamboo flatware that comes in a handy carrying case--perfect for tucking in your purse or pocket for meals on the go.

    • 5). Send reusable flatware in your children's school lunches. If you are concerned about losing a piece of nice silverware, send plastic utensils but encourage them to bring the utensils back. Wash them thoroughly at home and reuse them rather than throwing the plastic utensils away.
