World-record holder Michael Phelps (Baltimore, Md.) won two gold medals and set one meet record Sunday on the final night of competition at the 2008 Toyota Southern California Grand Prix of Swimming. Matt Grevers (Lake Forest, Ill.) and Kaitlin Sandeno (Lake Forest, Calif.) earned the men's and women's high-point award for their overall performance at the meet, while the Mecklenburg Aquatic Club took home the meet's overall team title.


In Phelps' first race of the night, the 100y fly, he came from behind in the last 50 yards to beat Grevers to the wall. Phelps finished in 45.40 to win gold and Grevers was second in 46.33. Club Wolverine's Davis Tarwater (Knoxville, Tenn.) was third in 47.71.

Phelps second win of the night came in the men's 100y back. Phelps swam a meet-record time of 45.50 to win gold. Trojan Swim Club's Peter Marshall (Atlanta, Ga.) was second in 45.65 and Grevers came in third in 46.19.

In Phelps' third and final race, the 100y breast, he came in second to 2004 Olympian and Mecklenburg Aquatic Club swimmer Mark Gangloff. Gangloff turned in a time of 53.09 to win gold while Phelps won the silver in 53.41. Matt Smith (Santa Clara, Calif.) won bronze in 54.92.

Kaitlin Sandeno earned her fourth meet record in the women's 200y I.M., winning gold with a time 1:56.90. Kim Vandenberg (Moraga, Calif.) was second in 1:57.59 and Caitlin Leverenz (Tucson, Ariz.) was third in 2:00.11.

Dana Kirk (Bremerton, Wash.) took home her second gold medal of the meet with a win in the women's 100y fly.

Kirk finished in 51.92, while Mary Descenza (Naperville, Ill.) was second in 52.04. Mecklenburg Aquatic Club's Margaret Hoelzer finished third in 53.40.

In the women's 1650y free, 2004 Olympian and Mecklenburg Aquatic Club swimmer Carly Piper (Grosse Point, Mich.) won gold in 16:19.53. Lyndsay DePaul (Orange, Calif.) won the silver with a time of 16:23.59, and Washington State University's Erin McCleave (Rutherglen, Australia) took home the bronze in 16:26.05.

In the men's 1650y free, Erik Vendt (North Eaton, Mass.) missed the American record by a little more than three tenths, finishing with a meet-record time of 14:26.97. Vendt took home the gold, Jan Daniec (Mission Viejo, Calif.) won the silver in 15:30.15 and Zane Grothe (Boulder City, Nev.) won the bronze in 15:34.58.

Mary Descenza (Naperville, Ill.) added to her medal count with a win in the women's 100y back. The Athens Bulldog swimmer came from behind to win the race with a time of 52.40. Hoelzer took home the silver in 52.74 and Sandeno won bronze in 53.57.

In other races, Tara Kirk (Bremerton, Wash.) won gold in the women's 100y breast, setting a meet record with a time of 59.11. Jessica Hardy (Long Beach, Calif.) won the silver in 1:00.68 and Keri Hehn (Fargo, N.D.) won bronze in 1:00.92. In the men's 200y I.M., Grevers won gold in 1:43.56, Tamas Kerekjarto (Hungary) won silver in 1:45.26, and Adam Ritter (Reynoldsburg, Ohio) won bronze in 1:46.15.

The 2007-2008 Toyota Grand Prix Series will continue with the University of Missouri Grand Prix in Columbia, Mo., February 15-18.
