Younger elementary should be instructed in proper number formation. Teachers should demonstrate how to form the numbers and how large numbers should be on lined papers. Frequent practice will encourage better penmanship. - Flashcards with the number and quantity encourage comprehension--especially for those who are visual learners. Other flashcards with the number and the word written out encourage further understanding.

Instruct students about how, when and why we use rulers. Measuring cups and spoons should also be integrated into the math classroom, which encourage division comprehension. - Teach counting by fives by counting nickles.Image by Flickr.com, courtesy of Hey Paul
Show students different bills and coins, and teach them about how to count money. Use money when teaching about counting by fives, tens and twenties. Allow students to play with some Curious George currency, courtesy of PBSkids.org, to encourage money counting skills.
