Many types of food come in gallon-sized jars. These jars can be recycled after being emptied, but they can be useful right in your own home. Store foods like cereal, snacks, spices, pet food or even homemade cookies. Display the items directly on your countertop for an apothecary look without the distraction of labels and logos. The jars will keep your dry foods organized and leave more space in your cupboards without the messy chaos of cardboard boxes. Gallon jars can also be used to store food when camping. The jars will protect the food from moisture and insects. - You may be surprised by what you find in your time capsule.time image by Mykola Velychko from Fotolia.com
Create a time capsule with gallon-sized jars. Fill the jars with objects that represent parts of your life at the current moment. Include invitations from parties or weddings, photos, clothing items, children's artwork, self-addressed letters and any other item that you may want to remember in the future. Put the time capsule into the family attic, or bury it in your yard. Dig it up after a period of time (usually five to 10 years) and reminisce about the items you saved. - Craft materials can be a pain to sort through when you want something specific.craft a card! image by Shirley Hirst from Fotolia.com
Create a "craft in a jar" program at home. Rather than sifting through all of your craft materials, keep them organized into separate craft kits. Put all of the materials that you need for a specific craft into one jar. This is a very handy idea when you have children at home. If you have nothing planned on a particular day, open up one of the jars and complete the craft together. Consider keeping several jars of crafts available in a closet or craft cupboard for a quick-and-easy craft set-up. You can even precut the materials and perform the more dangerous steps before putting the items into the jar, so the craft is all ready to go. - Dishrags can pick up many germs, food particles and odors, just from a single use while cleaning up or washing dishes. Many restaurants and other places of business will set up a bucket for dishrag and towel sanitation. A gallon-sized glass jar works well for the same purpose. Fill the glass jar with a solution of bleach and water (mixed to manufacturer's instructions) and keep it in the cupboard under your sink. Once you have used a dishrag, rinse it under the faucet and toss it into the jar. Change the bleach water daily and use it throughout the day for cleaning rags of all kinds.
