- A PADI Open Water Diver is qualified to dive up to depths of 18 meters with a buddy in conditions similar, or better, than those that they were trained in. Divers who are diving in new conditions are encouraged to seek further training and advice.
- The Open Water Diver Course normally takes three to four days. It incorporates independent study from a manual, watching a DVD and taking quizzes in a classroom session with an Instructor. This part of the course can also be done online through the PADI eLearning portal. Divers learn basic scuba skills in confined training in a swimming pool or swimming pool-like conditions before repeating these skills over four dives in open water.
- Divers must be at least 10 years old to participate in an Open Water Diver course. Between the ages of 10 to 14, divers earn the Junior certification, which can be upgraded when the diver turns 15. All divers must sign a medical declaration prior to diving activities.
