Create clean, long lines in the kitchen by decreasing counter clutter. Put away jars of utensils, toasters and coffee makers. If you want to display artwork on the walls, keep it to one or two pieces. Choosing art with open spaces will give the illusion of more room. Paint the kitchen in a bright color, or use colors reminiscent of the outdoors. If you have wood cabinets, choose softer colors like blue or green. If you have dark cabinets, think about painting them a lighter color. Keep the window coverings sheer to let in as much light as possible. - A bed set away from the walls makes the room appear larger.Jupiterimages/Photos.com/Getty Images
A bedroom should feel like a peaceful retreat, and this can be hard to do in a small space. To open up the room, reduce the clutter; too many knick-knacks add heaviness to a space. Use the smallest mattress possible so the room doesn't look overwhelmed by the bed. Maximize your closet space by using rods and stacking organizers. This will enable you to use a smaller dresser. Window treatments should open wide so all of the window is visible and maximum light comes into the room. One key to making a small bathroom seem bigger is organization. Clear out old items in the medicine cabinet. Use bins and drawers to keep toiletries in order. Eliminate items that could go in a laundry room or kitchen. Put more mirrors up on the walls; there is no need to limit it to just the medicine cabinet. Mirrored walls, combined with good lighting, can make the room feel bigger. Clear clutter off the floor. Get rid of laundry baskets, scales and other unnecessary items. Light-colored walls, counters and floors also help open the space and make it appear larger. - A glass table will make the room seem larger.Jupiterimages/Photos.com/Getty Images
When we entertain, we hope guests feel comfortable in our living room, but this can be tricky in a small space. To make the room seem bigger, keep all furniture from blocking the windows to allow as much light in as possible. Use clear, Plexiglas pieces or tables with glass tops so you can see the floor. Make sure the furniture is the right scale for the room -- a couch that is too large will make the room seem small and cramped. Cabinets and shelving that are vertical increase storage space and make the room seem larger.
