- 1). Empty the contents of a 16- or 20-ounce plastic water bottle.
- 2). Insert a plastic funnel into the opening of the water bottle and fill the bottle about half-full with liquid nitrogen. Note that a significant amount of nitrogen will evaporate in the process of simply cooling the bottle. Consequently, adding 8 ounces of liquid nitrogen to a bottle will require two or three times this amount of liquid nitrogen to start with.
- 3). Stretch the opening of a balloon and place it over the bottle's opening. Depending on the size of the balloon, it will inflate with nitrogen gas in a matter of seconds or minutes. After it inflates, pinch the balloon at its neck, remove it from the bottle and tie the bottom of the balloon into a knot.
