- Of the 34 colleges and universities ranked by "U.S. News and World Report" in 2011, Howard University came in second on the list. Located in Washington, D.C., Howard was founded in 1867 shortly after the end of the Civil War. The school offers undergraduate, graduate and professional degrees in 12 colleges, including business, communications, dentistry, divinity, education, engineering, architecture and computer science, law, medicine, pharmacy, nursing and allied health, and social work. Specialized study ranges from topics such as black politics to anthropology and civil engineering to geriatrics. Eighty-eight percent of Howard faculty members possess degrees from national research institutions.
- Ranked fourth in the nation by U.S. News and World Report, Hampton University in Hampton, Va., was founded in 1868. The school offers 68 undergraduate degree programs, 27 master's degree programs, six doctoral degree programs and two education specialist degree programs. Programs of study include community agency counseling, educational leadership, pastoral education, nursing, applied mathematics, biology, music, medical science, marketing, aviation technology and chemical engineering. Hampton University's student to faculty ratio is 16 to one, with a total enrollment of 5,402 as of January 2011.
- Tuskegee University, located in Tuskegee, Ala., was ranked fifth. The school was founded in 1881 and is included on the federal list of National Historic Sites. Dr. Booker T. Washington was Tuskegee's founder, first teacher and first principal. The university offers undergraduate, graduate and professional degrees from six colleges, including agricultural, environmental and natural sciences; business and information science; architecture and construction science; engineering and physical sciences; liberal arts and education; and veterinary medicine, nursing and allied health. Seventy-five percent of the black veterinarians in the U.S. graduate from Tuskegee and the school has graduated more military officers than any other university. The university is home to a NASA-funded center for space horticulture, a center for plant biotechnology research and a championship football team.
- Xavier University of Louisiana, located in New Orleans, ranked sixth. This private, Catholic school was first established as a high school in 1915. The university offers 47 undergraduate, graduate and professional degree programs. The college of arts and sciences offers degree programs in subjects ranging from art to computer science, physics to theology. Xavier University's college of pharmacy produces almost 30 percent of African-American pharmacists in the U.S.
