- 1). Measure the dimensions of the room with a tape measure. Measure and mark the lengths of each type of molding to the length of each wall. Mark the molding section to correspond with each wall by lettering or number each piece.
- 2). Cut each section of each type of molding to length using the miter saw. The ends of each molding length should be cut at a 45-degree angle so that the back side of the molding is to length and the front side of the molding is short. This will allow the molding to fit together correctly at each 90-degree corner angle.
- 3). Hold each square molding up into the corner of the ceiling and wall joint. Nail the molding in place by driving finish nails through it into the wall every 6 to 8 inches with a hammer.
- 4). Place the quarter-round molding up on the front face of the square molding with the top flush with the ceiling. Nail the molding in place by driving finish nails through it and into the wall every 6 to 8 inches.
- 5). Position the cove molding underneath the square molding so the top is flush with the bottom of the square molding and the back side is flush with the wall. Drive finish nails through it and into the wall every 6 to 8 inches.
- 6). Set the nails into the molding approximately 1/16 inch with a nail set.
- 7). Fill the nail holes with wood putty using the edge of a putty knife. Allow the putty to dry overnight. Sand the putty with fine grit sandpaper.
- 8). Paint the filled nail holes with a matching touch-up paint, if needed.
