How to File for Social Security Disability at Age 62

    • 1). Gather all the information you will need to complete the disability application including your Social Security number, birth certificate, the names of all your physicians including their addresses and phone numbers, the names of all the caseworkers who have worked on your case and the names and address of each hospital you visited. In addition to names and addresses, you will need the dates of each doctor or hospital visit.

    • 2). Gather all the medical information you have including prescription and non-prescription medicines that you take as well as the dosages. Additionally, you need medical records associated with doctor visits including lab results.

    • 3). Gather your employment history information including names of employers, addresses and your previous year's W-2 statement. Additionally, you will need to write a paragraph or two about the type of work you were doing. For people age 60 and over, you need 9.5 years of recent work records that end in the calendar year you turn 62.

    • 4). Visit SSA.gov, and download the Social Security Disability information packet. It has information to answer questions you might have regarding disability coverage, and it has information on how to apply that you can print off and keep at hand.

    • 5). Visit socialsecurity.gov, and complete the online disability coverage application.

    • 6). Make an appointment to apply for disability benefits by phoning the Social Security department 800-772-1213 between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. Eastern Standard Time. If you have mobility issues and can't visit the local office, you can schedule a representative to call you back and take your application by phone.

    • 7). Receive your "Disability Starter Kit" in the mail, or download it online at Socialsecurity.gov.

    • 8). Attend your scheduled appointment, and bring all your medical and employment information.

    • 9). Wait five to eight weeks for a decision by mail.
