- The 2001 GMC Sierra was the first redesign of the Sierra line since it was introduced in 1988. According to MSN Autos, the Sierra outsells other GMC models by a 2-to-1 margin. It distinguishes itself from other General Motors models with its styling. The 2001 Sierra comes in three models: 1500, 2500 and 3500. Buyers had a choice of an extended cab version, a short bed or a long bed, and two-wheel or four-wheel drive.
- The 1500 comes in three models: C3, SL and SLE. The C3 is an all-wheel drive vehicle with a 6-liter, 325-horsepower, V-8 engine. The SL and SLE come with either a two-wheel or four-wheel drive. The four-wheel drive model has a 5.3-liter, 285-horsepower, V-8 engine; the rear-wheel drive model has a 4.3-liter, 200-horsepower V-6 engine. City mileage ranges from 15 to 17 mpg, while highway mileage ranges from 18 to 23 mpg. All models have air conditioning, power windows, power locks and seat a maximum of three people. CD players are standard in the C3 and SLE. Airbags and an anti-lock brake system are standard in all models.
- The Sierra 2500 comes in an SL, SLE and SLT model. All are available in four-wheel drive and rear-wheel drive. All models come standard with a 6-liter, 300-horsepower, V-8 engine. Buyers had the option of upgrading to a 6.6-liter, 300-horsepower engine or an 8.1-liter, 340-horsepower engine. All three models come with a regular cab or an extended cab option and manual or automatic transmission. Airbags and an anti-lock braking system are standard on all models. The Sierra 2500 comes in seven different exterior colors. Some of these pickups have a 26-gallon fuel tank, while others have a 34-gallon tank. The SLT comes with OnStar.
- The Sierra 3500 comes in SL, SLE and SLT models. Optional engines include a 6-liter, 300-horsepower V-8, the Duramax 6.6-liter, 300-horsepower, turbo-diesel V-8 and the Vortex 8.1-liter, 340-horsepower, big block V-8. The Sierra 3500 comes with four-, five- and six-speed transmissions with rear-wheel or four-wheel drive. It can seat up to six people. Standard features include four-wheel, anti-lock brakes, and driver and passenger airbags. There are four interior options and seven exterior options. This is the heavy-duty workhorse of the Sierra line.
