How to Troubleshoot Water Heaters

    • 1). Verify the water heater has been properly installed. If you are using an electric heater, make sure it is connected to a working power outlet. If you are using a gas heater, make sure it is connected to the gas line. Open the valve on the gas line to ensure the heater is getting proper gas flow.

    • 2). Turn the heater on. If you are using an electric water heater make sure it is turned to the "ON" position. If you are using gas, verify the pilot light is working. The pilot light will be located at the base of the water heater. If it is not lit, follow the instructions printed on the pilot light door to reignite the light. The lighting method varies amongst water heaters, so be sure to refer to the instructions printed on your heater.

    • 3). Adjust the thermostat. Locate the thermostat control knob on your heater. It is typically located on the front of your heater towards the base. Adjust it until you reach your desired temperature.

    • 4). Check for leaks. Check along all pipes and connections to verify all seals are tight and no water is leaking from the connections. If you do find a leak, replace the pipe or connector.

    • 5). Clean your water heater. Clean any burners and the pilot light to ensure they are not clogged. Be sure to disconnect the power to the heater or shut off the gas before attempting to clean it.

    • 6). Flush and drain your water heater. Shut off power or gas to the heater. Shut off the incoming water valve at the heater. Attach a hose to your water heater's drain valve and run it outside. If you cannot run the hose outside, use a large bucket or run it into a bathroom or other available drain. Open the drain on the water. Turn on a hot water faucet in your house. This will force air into the pipes and force the water heater to drain. Once the heater has completely drained, turn the incoming water valve on and off until all of the water draining out of your heater is clear. Shut of the incoming water, turn off the faucet and remove the hose. Turn the water back on and reconnect the power or gas.
