- 1). Sand the floorboards of the deck with a 100-grit sanding sponge to create an evenly dull surface. Sanding not only prepares the floor for staining, but it also removes fingerprints, dirt and surface imperfections.
- 2). Vacuum the sawdust and grit left after sanding. Remove any remaining traces with a tack cloth to ensure a clean foundation for the stain.
- 3). Prepare a can of wood stain according to the directions indicated on the product label. Apply an even coat to the floorboards using a paint roller or natural-bristle brush, following the direction of the wood grain. Staining the wood renews its color and evens out the shade.
- 4). Allow the stain to set overnight, then brush a sanding sealer over the floor. The coat dries quickly, so smooth it thoroughly with a 280-grit sanding sponge once the sealer is dry to the touch.
- 5). Seal the floor's restored condition with a polyurethane wood varnish; this will add a tough, glossy finish to the hardwood while preserving its moisture and appearance. Apply full coverage with a painter's rag or foam brush in the direction of the grain, then allow the coat to dry overnight.
- 6). Sand the deck with the 280-grit sanding sponge, then brush a second application of varnish. Repeat the same method with one to two more coats, but leave the top coat unsanded.
