Everywhere you see and hear that you should be doing specific things to keep tabs while your children are on the web.
Keeping your computer in an area of the home which is high traffic is helpful and placing a blocker to keep them away from some inappropriate content on the web is another, yet do you actually know what they are doing on the web when you are not around? Also, internet blocking does not block pictures, so if they are looking up inappropriate content in picture form they can generally get access to it anyway.
Social media websites may also have inappropriate content and pictures that will not be blocked and these sites like My Space, Facebook, and You Tube can provide a lot of different content that you might not want your children looking at.

Putting your computer in a central location also could help to deter inappropriate usage of the web but to what point when parents are at work or when a child is home sick from school.
Even when you are sleeping your kids could be getting up and using the internet.
Really there is no way to keep them in a bubble with the current internet and it is therefore critical that as a parent you install some sort of key logger program or parental spyware to give you a glimpse of your children's internet usage.
You can not be there all the time and children are smart and know how to find ways around the rules yet if you are really looking for a way to see exactly what the children are looking at and talking about on the web then you really need a spyware program to help you keep tabs on internet utilization in your household.
