How to Replace a Ceiling Fan With an Extension Rod

    • 1). Turn off the power to the room. Go to the circuit panel to turn off the circuit for the room.

    • 2). Remove the screws that are used to secure the canopy to the mounting bracket in the ceiling with the screwdriver.

    • 3). Hold the fan to keep it from falling, and lower the canopy to expose the electrical wiring. Unscrew the wire covers, and untwist the electrical wires. Remove the ground wire by unscrewing the ground screw with the screwdriver.

    • 4). Remove the fan assembly, and set it on the floor.

    • 5). Attach the downrod to the downrod mount. The ball end of the mount needs to face up towards the ceiling. Secure the downrod to the downrod mount by tightening the screw on the mount with the screwdriver.

    • 6). Insert the wires from the fan motor into the downrod and the canopy.

    • 7). Place the downrod on the connector post or yoke on the motor. Align the holes on the downrod and the post. Insert the connector pin into the holes, and use the cotter pin to secure the connector pin.

    • 8). Tighten the set screw on the downrod with the screwdriver to secure it to the motor.

    • 9). Place the downrod mount into the mounting bracket. The groove on the downrod mount needs to fit into the tab on the mounting bracket.

    • 10

Twist the white wire together, and screw on a wire cover. Repeat this step with the black wire. Connect the green wire to the ground screw on the mounting bracket.

    • 11

Set the canopy onto the mounting bracket, and secure it with the screws. Turn on the power to the room to complete the project.
