OotyLakeis a man-made lake and was built by John Sullivan in the year 1824. The water running down the mountain in the Ooty vale was dammed to shape the lake. The lake was earlier constructed, as a fishing center with ferries utilized to cross the lake. The lagoon has slowly contracted from its unique dimension providing space for the present bus stand, race route and the park near the lake. You need to buy bus tickets well in advance before you actually want to visit the place.
Features of Ooty Lake
The lake is encircled by woodlots of Eucalyptus trees on one side and a rail line on the other coast. In the summer season and in the months of May ferry races and ferry display are prearranged for 2 days. Remember to book well in advance your bus tickets reservation.
Boat house
The ferry house on the lake was launched by the TTDC (Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation). Needless to say boating is the main attraction of the Ooty Lake. You can visit the lake and hire a boat from 9.00 am to 5.30 pm and you need to pay a fee of INR 5 for getting into the boat house and in case you want to hire a boat then the starting price is INR 60.
You get paddle boats, motor boats, and row boats from the boat house that you can rent to have a look at the lake and to travel down the lake. There is also thedeer parkand children's park near the boat house. The park for children also has toy trains that they will surely like.
Horse riding
Horse riding is very popular here. Within an hour you can go a full round around the lake. Lest you are looking for longer rides then you can go around the countryside in Ooty. Some information about riding the horse will be good, since the guides are only local men, who are not aware of much English. You will have to pay the guide at the rate of 4 USD per hour.
Things you can buy when in Ooty
Ooty is very famous for products like tea, chocolates, eucalyptus oil, spices and last but not the least the gourmet cheese. You will find a lot of shops, who sell all these products. However, be careful when you shop and look for only authentic products. Do not forget to get Ooty biscuits known as Varkey and other different bakery items, which are home made.
