Sleeping under the stars on a luxury African safari

Sleeping under the stars on a luxury African safari has a certain allure and offers the ultimate safari experience. Camping underneath a blanket of stars in Africa is a real privilege and enables you to get that much closer to the African wildlife as you become one with the environment.

Mobile safaris are the closest you could possible get to a ‘real African experience'; they enable you to get into the very heart of the African bush, stepping off the beaten track. A mobile safari in Africa is reminiscent of the expeditions taken by the early explorers and offers a highly refreshing element of flexibility to your holiday as you're able to explore remote areas of the African bush which are far beyond the reaches of a normal game drive.

A mobile safari differs from other safaris as your location of where you stay changes on a daily basis as you travel around the African bush. Mobile safaris are a great way to explore a wider variety of game reserves, safari parks and environments, making the thrill in the journey as well as your destination.

Camp site facilities range greatly dependent on your destination and budget, ranging from luxury tented safari camps offering proper beds, en suite bathrooms with some even offering their own chef and bar. However, at the other end of the scale the camp sites still have relative modern comforts such as toilets and showers which are shared and facilities where you can dine out underneath the stars. No matter your budget is it no longer means having to rough it, even the ‘basic' camp sites offer several modern comforts that you would be surprised were included in a safari camp.

One of the finest locations for a mobile safari is the untamed wilderness of Botswana; the most popular areas for a mobile safari are the Okavango Delta where you can take advantage of both a dry-land and a wet-land game experience, the Chobe National Park, the Kalahari and the Magadikgadi Pans.

A mobile safari in Botswana can typically last anywhere from five to thirteen days, combining various game reserves, safari parks, and national parks where you will usually spend now more two or three nights in any one location.

There are several other ways to experience the great African wilderness such as a balloon safari, a river safari, horseback safari and an elephant back safari. Each form of safari gives you unique wilderness experiences and therefore unique holiday's experiences. For example an elephant back safari will get you much closer to the wildlife than any other form of safari, whereas a balloon safari will give you totally unique views of the entire environment as you soar silently above the great African plains.

But for me the only true luxury African safari experience is a mobile safari, sleeping under a blanket of stars is unlike anything you will ever experience.
