- 1). Put on safety equipment before you enter the area where something has died. Wear gloves, a breathing filter such as a dust mask over your nose and mouth, and clothes that you can throw away after your cleaning project. Double-check your mask to make sure it is in one piece and not damaged.
- 2). Locate the origin of the odor. Watch for flies and bugs in the area. Avoid contacting the origin of the smell. Do not remove your mask while you are looking for the origin of the smell. Move furniture as needed to gain access to areas behind furniture or inside vents.
- 3). Turn a bag inside out, and place your hand into the bag. When you find the dead animal, pull it into the bag, and tie the bag closed. Dispose of the animal in accordance to animal disposal laws in your state. Do not leave the animal in your trash can or anywhere around your home where children or neighborhood animals could come into contact with it.
- 4). Use a bleach-based cleaner on the area where the animal was found. Let the cleaner sit on the area for at least 30 minutes before you wipe it up. Repeat this step if the area remains stained or if the scent does not improve.
- 5). Watch the area for the next few days. If you see a concentration of flies in the area, or if you notice that the odor remains, repeat the sanitation process. If the area does not seem to improve, contact a professional cleaning service to clean the area for you.
