- 1). Ask her where she's from. Most people enjoy talking about their hometown or state. If you've never been there, ask her about what she enjoyed, or didn't enjoy, about it and what she enjoys about where she lives now. Tell her your experiences, which will let her get to know you.
- 2). Mention recent cultural events. If a festival just happened in your town, or a popular band came through, ask her whether she attended. Use a story about a popular local figure or unusual event in the news as a conversational ice-breaker. Try to stay away from depressing stories, though.
- 3). Comment on something she's wearing. Ask about her jewelry, eyeglasses or an interesting jacket or purse. While you may not directly relate to her answer, it could spark a conversation about how you do or don't like to shop, or the Caribbean island where she bought the handcrafted earrings.
- 4). Use the venue to start a conversation. If you're in line for a movie premiere, you have something in common. Ask her if she liked the starring actor's previous film. At a coffee shop, ask if she's been to any of the open mike or trivia nights the café hosts. If she doesn't care for that type of entertainment, ask her what local events she likes.
- 5). Ask her about her job. Almost everybody has to work, so you'll probably have that in common. Ask how long she's been in her current job and what she likes about it. If she asks about your work, stay positive even if you don't like your job. Launching into a diatribe about your boss usually doesn't make for good conversation.
- 6). Leave politics and religion out of the initial conversation unless you happen to be talking to her at a fundraiser or political demonstration. These topics often raise people's ire, which isn't the best way to get to know someone.
