Patio furniture comes in a wide array of styles to suit every backyard landscape. Patio set selection involves picking the right size furniture to fit into the patio space as well as picking a patio set that performs the desired function. If the patio space is a dining area, tables and chairs are the appropriate patio sets to choose rather than sofas or lounge chairs. - A table and chairs continue to retain their popularity as patio sets. Most people prefer sitting to standing while they're outside relaxing, and a table provides the opportunity to share a meal or play a game with family members. The price range on patio tables and chairs varies as much as the style. While traditional tables and chairs made from metals such as wrought iron or steel are easy to find, if price is a factor in choosing a stylish patio set, lighter, less-expensive polyvinyl chloride (PVC) or aluminum sets are available. Bistro seating with two chairs is a good option for a small patio. Larger sets with four and six chairs are also easy to find. Table and chair sets are available in regular seating height as well as bar stool height. Cushions and umbrellas enhance the appearance of each table and chair set.
- If people aren't using their patios for outdoor meals and entertaining, they use them for relaxing. Loungers provide the opportunity to stretch out and enjoy the patio. Lounge chair materials range from lightweight aluminum and PVC to durable teakwood and metal. Cushions make the seating more comfortable. If the loungers aren't full lounge chairs, Adirondack-style chairs with ottomans are another favorite way to relax and put your feet up on the patio. Often lounge chair patio sets come with side tables to hold refreshments. An umbrella and stand may also be part of the set.
- Patio furniture is becoming more elaborate. At one time a patio might hold a table and two chairs or two folding loungers. Now furnishing an outdoor sofa or loveseat, a table, and a couple chairs grouped together is common to form a conversation/eating area of a patio. These casual seating sets feature construction designed to withstand the elements for a number of years. While cushions are the most likely to wear out, they are easy to replace. The main furniture pieces in a casual seating set are often two or three main seats plus a table. Additional rocking chairs, chaise lounges, ottomans, side tables and umbrellas complement the set.
