- 1). Check the level of the engine oil by pulling out the dipstick and wiping it clean with a rag. Reinsert it fully, then pull it out again and read the level where the oil contacts the hash marks on the end of the dipstick. Reinstall the dipstick.
- 2). Add engine oil if necessary by unscrewing the oil cap in a counterclockwise direction. Pour in the quantity of high quality SAE-30 weight high detergent motor oil as needed. Replace and tighten the oil cap.
- 3). Remove the gas cap located on top of the engine by unscrewing it in a counterclockwise direction. Add unleaded gas, 85 octane or greater so that the fuel level is within 1 1/2 inches below the top of the fill neck on the gas tank. Replace the gas cap.
- 4). Press the fuel primer bulb five to six times slowly. Wait three seconds between pumps so that fuel has time to flow into the carburetor. The bulb is located eight inches to the left of the spark plug cap on the top of the engine.
- 5). Slide the choke lever, located next to the fuel primer bulb on the engine, to the "full" position. Set the throttle located on the machine or device handlebars or control assembly to the "start" position.
- 6). Put on eye protection. Stand well behind the machine or device that contains the Briggs & Stratton 660. Hold the bail, or clutch closed on the machine (if available), then pull the starter cord slowly. When you feel resistance, pull the cord sharply. Repeat the slow/sharp pulling technique until the engine starts.
- 7). Allow the engine to run for approximately one minute to warm up, move the choke lever to the "off" position, then slide the throttle control to the "run" or idle position. The engine is now ready to operate the machine.
