- 1). Prepare the bonding application. If applying the stucco to concrete or brick, a concrete bonding must be applied and dried completely before beginning the project. For wood, the roofing felt must be nailed to the wall, followed by the metal netting.
- 2). Mix the mortar according to the package directions. Don’t make too large of a batch, or it will dry in the container. Mix enough mortar to finish one wall at a time.
- 3). Apply the mortar ¼ to ½ inch deep. If applying to wood, use a trowel to mash the mortar into the netting. This will ensure that everything sticks together. Allow the mix to partially dry. This will take about 12 hours or so. Use the plasterer’s rake to scratch the mortar down, until it is at least 1/8th and no more than ¼ inch thick. This will give it texture and allow the other layer to stick. Let dry for 36 to 48 hours, periodically misting.
- 4). Use a flat finishing trowel to apply the finishing coat. Apply the mortar between 1/8th and ¼ inch thick. Mold the stucco to the desired shape before allowing to dry. Periodically mist while the finishing coat dries. This will prevent the stucco from cracking and falling off.
- 5). Wait at least six weeks before painting the stucco. Use a paint that is specifically designed for stucco walls. Fill in cracks with a brushable elastomeric sealant. Allow to dry before painting.Clean the wall before painting.
