I'm 30 years old. Just turned 30 about a month ago. I've been a practicing DUI attorney and criminal attorney for 5 years now, but I look like I just got out of law school. I own my own firm, have several websites that I've set up, and am doing pretty good business. But I think it could be better.
And I have a feeling people aren't calling me because my picture is on my website. So I wanted to talk about that today.
It's a known fact (or if it isn't a known fact it should be) that people have their own ideas and expectations of what lawyers should be and should look like. Most of these ideas come from television. Think of people like D.A. Jack McCoy from Law & Order or Alan Shore and Denny Crane from Boston Legal, or even Dan from Night Court. And most of these images are of people that are older, more distinguished, and more "experienced."
For the most part, people equate being old with being experienced. And they equate being experienced with being a good DUI attorneys. Of course, we all know that isn't necessarily the case, but we can't do much to negate that feeling, particularly when people's first impressions of you come on the internet, where they can't see you.
So, should you have your picture on your website? I think it's a tough call. I know for me, I think it hurts. I look young. In person I don't look that young and can demonstrate to people that I know what I'm talking about. But when people are searching for DUI defense attorneys [http://www.fightyourseattledui.com/attorneys.aspx], they have an image in their mind of what they want - and I think at first glance it might not be me.
I think the only true way to find out is with experimentation. I've had my picture up on my website for a while, and now I think I'm going to take it down and see what happens. You should do the same so you can find what works best for you.
