- Ford's 289 cubic inch engine was used in the Ford Mustang until 1968 and rated at 210 or 225 horsepower with a two-barrel carburetor and 271 horsepower with a four-barrel carburetor. This engine was paired with a standard three-speed automatic transmission or optional three or four-speed manual transmissions.
- Racing professional Carroll Shelby collaborated with Ford to produce a pair of specially tuned Ford Mustang fastback models. In street tune, the GT-350 is rated at 306 horsepower and in race tune the GT-350R is rated at 360 horsepower. The racing version of the Mustang featured modifications to the suspensions, shocks, steering and brakes.
- The Ford 289 engine found its way under the hood of other Ford vehicles including the Ford Fairlane and Ford Falcon. In 1968 this engine was replaced by a 302 cubic inch (5.0-liter) V-8.
