Many of the free options are aimed at those just getting started who just want to be able to complete the race.

The training programs that they charge you for are aimed at helping you to better your time and be more efficient in your training.

The last thing you want is a training program that is 12 weeks long when your first race is in 8 weeks! Another thing to keep in mind is the focus of the training program.
Some programs are available with more of a focus on one component or another of the triathlon in order to help you improve your weakest areas.
They still include training for all parts, they just have you train a little longer each week in one area.
Focusing the majority of your training on the weakest parts of your race will bring you the most benefit in the end.
