- Blunt point arrowheads can be made from any type of sturdy material, including plastic, rubber or metal. Their blunt ends are used to stun small game instead of killing the animal by penetrating the hide. Blunt points are also used for target shooting when the intention is to simply strike the target instead of keeping score based on the exact location of the hit.
- Some arrowheads are specifically designed for the purpose of spearing fish. These fish-point arrowheads have a long point that is spring-loaded or spiked with barbs to hold the fish in place. A fishing line is attached to the rear of the head so the fisherman can reel the fish in after striking it with the arrow.
- For hunting larger game, a broadhead is the best choice. These sturdy arrowheads have several sharp steel blades designed to penetrate the animal's hide. Check your local hunting regulations as some states have certain guidelines that must be followed when using broadhead points. This usually includes a minimum number of blades and minimum diameter for the arrowhead itself.
- Some broadhead arrowheads have mechanical blades that are held back against the ferrule in a retracted position until the arrow strikes its target. Once the tip impacts the surface, the cutting edges of the blades expand. Use this type of arrowhead with bows rated 50 lbs. or higher. A strong bow like this is needed to create the extra energy needed to expand the blades upon impact.
- Field points simulate the weight and flight characteristics of a broadhead point, but have a rounded shoulder to prevent errant shots from digging deep into trees and other obstacles. This allows hunters to practice their aim without spending extra time retrieving the arrows. Target points are also designed for practice, but use a smaller point instead of emulating a broadhead. The bullet-shaped points are very sharp to make small, precise holes in the target. Both of these arrowhead designs are intended to minimize the amount of damage that is done to the target and surrounding area during practice, which is especially important if you are practicing outdoors and continually striking trees or other natural objects.
