How to Set a VCR Timer

    • 1). Set the clock on the VCR to the correct time of day. Press the "Menu" button on the VCR remote and find the "Clock Set" option on the menu screen. This should bring up step-by-step instructions for inputting the current date and time. The process should involve using the directional keys on the remote.

    • 2). Return to the "Menu" screen and look for the "Timer Set" option. This will bring up a screen containing multiple fields for programming a set time. You can usually program up to eight recording jobs at once. For now, select the fields at the very top. This is usually done by pushing the "OK" button or the right directional button. (The menu screen should specify which one.)

    • 3). Program the time for which you want the VCR to record. The left and right buttons should move you across the onscreen programming row for the date, start time and stop time. The up and down buttons will set each time period.

    • 4). Set the channel you want to record from. If you're not hooked up to cable or satellite TV, set it to the broadcast channel on which your program will appear. If you have cable or satellite, set it to the default channel on which the TV set displays the cable signal. This is usually either channel 3 or the Line Out (L-1) channel.

    • 5). Select the recording speed on the menu. You usually have two options: Standard Play (SP) for better picture quality or Extended Play (EP) to take up less space on the cassette tape. There is often an "SP/EP" button on the remote to make this selection. Once everything is set, press the "OK" button to complete the programming.

    • 6). Insert a cassette tape into the VCR. The write-protect hole on the left side of the cassette must be covered for the tape to record. If the write-protect tab has been removed, place adhesive tape over it.

    • 7). Press the "Timer" button on either the remote control or the VCR itself. This will lock the VCR in an "off" position until the preset start time arrives. At this point, the VCR will automatically record for the programmed duration.
