How to Calculate the Velocity of a Bullet

    • 1). Verify that the firearm is unloaded. You will be setting up equipment down-range of the muzzle, so the gun must be unloaded for your safety. Walk down to the backstop, and set up your target.

    • 2). Use the tape measure and set up the tripod approximately 10 feet down-range from where you will be shooting.

    • 3). Install the chronograph unit onto the tripod. Most chronographs use a standard 1/4-20 thread pitch that threads onto the stud on a camera tripod. (1/4-20 thread pitch means 1/4-inch diameter and 20 threads per inch.) Align the two sets of screens toward the direction you will be shooting. Move the tripod height up or down as necessary to be able to shoot through the two sets of screens.

    • 4). Turn the unit on, walk back to your shooting area and load your weapon. Aim through the two sets of screens at your target, and take your shots.

    • 5). Unload the firearm, and walk to the chronograph to see the velocity readouts on the screen. Some chronographs have the option of printing out the results.
