How To Create Network Connections in Windows XP

Mobile users should use the Network Connections in Windows XP before using remote access networks, especially Wi-Fi hot spots. Using this provides additional security to their data and mobile gear.

Here's How:
  1. From the Start menu, select Settings -> Control Panel -> Network Connections.
  2. Right click on the Wireless Network Connection and choose Properties.
  3. Next click the Wireless Networks Tab.


  1. Make sure the "Use Windows to Configure my Wireless Network Settings" checkbox is checked.
  2. Under the "Preferred Networks" area click the ADD button.
  3. To set up your wireless profile, enter the network name into the Network Name(SSID) field. The SSID should be provided by the wireless service provider.
  4. If you are connecting to a DHCP server, you don't have to specify an IP address or enable WEP. This information should be provided by the wireless service provider.
  5. If you are not using a DHCP server, you will need to specify an IP address or enable WEP encryption.
  6. While in the 'Wireless Network Connection Properties' dialog box, ensure the name of the network you want to connect to is highlighted, then click the Advanced button.
  7. Ensure the 'Access point (infrastructure) networks only' radio button is selected.
  8. Close all dialog boxes. Your wireless configuration is ready.
