- This IQ test is generally known to determine the intelligence of an individual, but it is less accurate due to the nature of disability. Dr. Randy Kamphaus says that measuring by IQ is not accurate "because learning-disabled children often show normal or above average intelligence on IQ tests, but fail to achieve academically." He adds that it can incorrectly classify those who are mentally challenged or have emotional problems as having a learning disability.
- According to Psychologicaltesting.com, the IQ test's purpose is to measure attributes like "factual knowledge, short-term memory, abstract reasoning, visual-spatial abilities, and common sense," in addition to mathematics and vocabulary. A huge variety of tests are designed to determine this, but they break into two scales: verbal and performance. Verbal scales measure things like comprehension and mathematics. Performances scales deal with areas such as visual memory and spacial reasoning.
- The debate against the reliability of IQ tests eventually led to the development of the RTI model. Karen Kersting of the American Psychological Association explains that many experts feel this is the better method. However, Dr. Kamphaus warns that this method "lacks empirical support" and does not discover all children with learning disabilities.
- Unlike the traditional IQ test, the RTI method is used for exclusively for detecting learning disabilities. It does not involve written testing, but instead works on observation. The evaluation shows which children are struggling, gives them special assistance and then examines its effectiveness. In turn, the results will indicate whether or not further help is needed.
- The outward symptoms of learning disabilities can be detected by simple observation, allowing the initiation of the process of receiving help. The Learning Disabilities Association of America advises family members to look for problems with memory, attention span, reading, writing and organization. Certain behaviors might involve irregular performance, easy distraction and problems with listening or discipline.
