- 1). Dribble the basketball to the right side of your body. Identify your defender's stance and hand position. Verify your opponent is moving in the same direction that you are. Approach the defender by stepping forward with your left foot. Fake your body to the right side by lowering your right shoulder and leaning to the right. Push off your right foot and step towards your left side as the defender moves to the right, throwing him off balance.
- 2). Switch the basketball from your right hand to your left by quickly bouncing the ball directly in front of your body (some players have the agility to switch hands by bouncing the ball between their legs or behind their backs.) Thrust your right foot to the right side of the defender and dribble around him. Repeat this sequence if you are beginning the move on the left side of your body.
- 3). Drive towards the basket if there is an open lane and shoot the ball towards the hoop. Bank shot the ball if you perform the crossover on the left and pull to the left. Jump shot the ball if you execute the crossover on the left but pull back to the right. The same shots can be used when crossover is from the right side. Combine the crossover move with a screen from a teammate if the defender is not allowing the move.
- 4). Practice the crossover move against another player before applying it in a game situation. View on line videos showing the crossover move to gain a better understanding of executing the maneuver. Watch Allen Iverson of the Philadelphia 76ers in a National Basketball Association (NBA) game since he has perfected this move and uses it often to drive to the basket.
