First and foremost,be aware. Some times the mere act of simply being aware of your surroundings, other people and your daily routine can cause you to notice things that you would ordinarily ignore. Learn to trust your instincts, your guts. If you sense that something is wrong about a certain situation or person, you are probably right.
Criminals target real estate agents because they know that the nature of this business requires agents to sometime be alone when doing an open house or show off a property. So it is necessary that you as a real estate agent take your personal security as seriously as you pursue a sale.
Take along a friend. If at all possible, have a friend come along with you when you do an open house or meet with potential buyers. This will greatly decrease the possibility of some one trying to rob or assault you.
Meet with potential buyers at the office first. Before you go out in the field to meet with potential buyers have them come to the office and collect their personal information, like their driver's license. An individual will be less likely to try anything if they know their personal information is on file at your office. Plus, your co-workers will be able to give a description to the police if a crime occurs.
Keep your cell phone with you at all times. Many times you might all alone in a house with no working phone. Having your cell phone handy is like a life line to the out side world. Keep in charged up and and with you at all times.
Carry mace! In the event that some one tries to attack you, mace is a very effective deterrent. A blast of mace to the face can temporarily immobilize an attacker, allowing you time to escape. Of course, mace will do you no good if you leave it in the car,so be sure to take it with your where ever you go.
These are just a few simple, basic tips that can greatly reduce the chances of you becoming a victim of crime while you are out there pursuing your career success. Be aware and take pro-active steps to keep your self safe.
