- 1). Back up any important files or settings prior to beginning the cloning procedure.
- 2). Attach the USB hard drive adapter to the computer while it is running. Allow Windows XP to recognize the adapter and install any necessary hardware device drivers. Insert the driver disc if prompted.
- 3). Power down the computer, and attach the new hard drive to the USB hard drive adapter. Attach a power source to the drive, and power on the computer. Cancel any attempt that Windows makes to initialize the drive or create partitions.
- 4). Download and install one of the hard drive cloning software packages according to the instructions on the vendor's website.
- 5). Launch the hard drive cloning software from the shortcut on the desktop or from the File menu.
- 6). Click "Disk Utilities" from the main menu. Click "Clone Disk" from the "Disk Utilities" menu.
- 7). Click on "Next" to clone the disk with the automatic settings.
- 8). Select the source drive if necessary from the list of drives. The source disk is typically the "C" drive. If only one disk with data on it and one blank disk exist, the software will skip this step and the destination drive selection step.
- 9). Select the destination drive if necessary from the list of drives. Click "Next" to continue.

Confirm the deletion of the partition if the destination drive contains data, and click "Next" to continue. - 11
Allow the system to restart and complete the cloning operation. Shut down the system and swap the drives. - 12
Shut down the computer and disconnect the USB hard drive adapter. - 13
Remove the cover from the case, and attach the antistatic wrist strap to the inside of the computer on a location that is metallic, such as the frame. Connect the other end to your wrist. - 14
Remove the data cable and power adapter from the existing hard drive, and then remove the drive from the system. Replace the drive with the new drive, and reconnect the data and power adapters if the drives are the same type. - 15
Remove a blank slot cover from an available PCI slot if the two drives are different types, and install a hard drive controller card into the PCI slot. Secure the card in place with one screw using a screwdriver. Connect the data cable from the drive to the PCI hard drive controller card, and connect power to the hard drive.
